A photograph begins as a moment: light, weather, distance, and a decision to press the shutter. Over time it becomes something more durable — a memory you can enter again.
That is the spirit behind Travelsography. The images are offered as windows: some realistic, some reimagined, all rooted in the pleasure of standing somewhere worth remembering.
And sometimes the window becomes a poster.
The vintage poster works take familiar photographs one step further. They are less documentary than daydream — reminders that the places we love can live in imagination as well as memory.
Meet the Traveler
I'm Mitch Sowards.
On my first trip to Europe nearly forty years ago, my father loaned me his 35mm SLR camera. I came home with more than souvenirs. I came home with a new way of seeing the world.
Since then, travel has often meant art, architecture, food, music, and the occasional unforgettable sky. My wife and I like to say we travel for “art, architecture, and food… and sometimes music.” The camera became my way of collecting the feeling of those places without the motion and sound of video. The viewer’s imagination supplies the rest.
Most of these works are available in large formats because I think of them as windows rather than snapshots — openings into places I have been fortunate enough to stand.
Travel changes us.
Photography reminds us.
Art lets us return.
